How
can I separate the oil from the water in the bilge of my boat. I
do not want the bilge pump to come on pumping out the oil?
Paul Thom, Honolulu
Hawaii
Capt.
Mike's Answer:
Great
Question and I have a special guest
Dan
West who is the president of American
Marine Oil Systems to show his special filters and equipment that will separate
oil from your bilge water.
Also,
Mike is learning about the Liberty Filter that every
boater can place inline between the bilge pump and through hull fitting so that
you never pump any oil over board.
Remember, any discharge of oil, gas or petroleum
is illegal and can result in big fines plus clean up costs.
If
I document my boat with the US Coast Guard, can they seize my vessel to use
during a war?
Tom Watson, New York City, NY
Capt.
Mike's Answer:
To answer the
myth of only documented vessels being confiscated by the government during
wartime, well, the government
can take possession of any vessel whether documented or state registered.
To document you vessel you must be a US citizen who owns the vessel and
the vessel be over 5 net tons about 25 feet or larger. Documentation is
important if you plan any out of country voyages to show nationality, and
commercial, passenger, and ships must be documented.
The US Coast Guard
has more information on their website www.uscg.mil.

I
have a 44' Sportfisher and how do I use the boat's radio to make passing
arrangements with the big ships in the area?
Tom York, Miami, Florida
Capt.
Mike's Answer:
Well Tom I have
good news and bad news concerning your size of boat and the "big"
ships. You did not mention if underway in a harbor or in the ocean?
First the bad
news - you do not make passing arrangements with big ships, per se, but just stay
out of their way. Ships can not maneuver as easily as your size of vessel
and most of the time near a port or in a port they are in traffic lanes so be
sure to check your charts. Also, Rule 9 comes into play that basically
states any vessel restricted by size in a harbor has the right of way over other
vessels and this includes over power, sail, people powered, etc.
Now the good
news - you can contact the ships to ask for their intentions such as turning or
change in speed. Ships monitor channel 16 that all vessels should monitor,
and their bridge to bridge is channel 13. Plus, ships might be on another
channel with Vessel Traffic Information Services (VTIS channels 12, 14, or check
for your area) and you can hear their route plans with the VTIS.
Boater's should have a
copy of the book
Using Your VHF Radio onboard
by the radio.
